3.1 Bulk packaging and jumbo bags
PP raffia’s biggest use is woven bags and flexible intermediate bulk containers (FIBCs, or jumbo sacks). These hold cement, fertilizers, grain, sugar, plastic pellets, and industrial powders through storage and long-haul shipping across agriculture, chemicals, construction, and food. They take heavy loads, friction, and moisture without failing. In Europe and North America, jumbo sacks move most bulk industrial raw materials, and because so many are used, they also generate a large, steady stream of recyclable waste.
3.2 Agriculture and horticulture
PP raffia resists UV and water, so it works outdoors in farming. It becomes agricultural film, crop-protection nets, bird barriers, and plant-support ropes. Unlike natural fiber, it does not rot or soak up water after sitting in soil and rain, and it keeps over 80% of its strength after two years of outdoor or seawater exposure. It is also used for hay-baling wrap and greenhouse shade nets.
3.3 Construction and geotechnical engineering
Woven PP raffia becomes geotextiles for road-base separation, slope protection, and waterproofing. With puncture resistance above 400N, it stabilizes soil, slows water erosion, and extends the life of infrastructure. The ropes and strapping tape also bundle construction materials and hold temporary structures in place, mainly because they are light and strong.
3.4 Household goods, textiles, and decoration
Outside industry, PP raffia is woven into household curtains, carpets, storage baskets, and accessories. Some European home brands use recycled PP raffia fiber because it sheds almost no microplastics in use or washing, which makes it a more reasonable choice than some synthetic textiles.
4. How PP raffia is recycled: process and standards
Recycling follows a closed loop meant to keep the recycled material pure and consistent:
- Sort and clean: screen out foreign matter, dust, and leftover cargo, then separate by color and thickness so impurities do not mix in.
- Shred and wash: cut the raffia into small pieces, then wash at high temperature to remove stains and chemical residue.
- Dry and pelletize: dry the clean pieces fully, then melt, extrude, and form them into recycled PP (rPP) pellets.
- Modify and reuse: add compatibilizers and UV stabilizers so the rPP can go back into raffia tape, woven sacks, and geotextiles.

4.2 Jumbo bag recycling
Waste jumbo bags are the best feedstock in PP raffia recycling. Most are single-material pure PP, with a consistent texture and few impurities, so they recycle cleanly and hold their value. In Europe, dedicated firms collect used bulk sacks from manufacturing, construction, and agriculture and process them centrally.
The pellets from these bags become new low-load woven sacks, geotextiles, and strapping tape. The material is fully reused, which cuts industrial plastic waste.

The EU’s Single-Use Plastics Directive and circular-economy plans, plus procurement rules from North American brands, have raised demand for recycled PP raffia. The global recycled PP raffia market keeps growing at a steady pace. Compared with other plastic recycling streams, PP raffia recycling has real advantages: the waste supply is steady, sorting is simple, processing is cheap, and the recycled product performs well enough to reuse. Modified rPP pellets can replace some virgin PP raffia resin, lowering material costs while meeting emission targets. In Europe, where standards are high, better modification lets recycled PP raffia hold tensile strength and weather resistance close to virgin material, so it can re-enter mid- and high-end woven products.
5.3 Challenges and future potential
The main problems are inconsistent impurities in scattered agricultural waste and color mixing that limits high-end reuse. Centralized industrial collection and smarter sorting equipment are fixing both, slowly.
